Investment 2021 — Realized

Powin

A growth position in utility-scale battery energy storage: backed in 2021, Powin was a global leader in the design and manufacturing of safe, scalable battery energy storage systems for utility-scale, C&I, and microgrid applications.

Powin

Powin was a global leader in the design and manufacturing of safe and scalable battery energy storage systems built for the demands of utility-scale, C&I, and microgrid applications.

Based in Oregon, Powin served utilities, IPPs, and project developers across North America by offering differentiated turnkey products and long-term operating solutions. Its systems leveraged proprietary software and global supply chain capabilities.

EKS Energy

In 2022, Powin acquired EKS Energy, a Spain-based specialist in power electronics, the foundational technology to every battery storage system, enabling power conversion and controls that move energy between battery cells and the grid. Bringing that layer in-house gave Powin the ability to deliver fully integrated, grid-scale storage rather than assembling its systems around third-party components.

With more than 4.5 GW of inverters deployed worldwide, EKS contributed deep European engineering and a global track record, including the power-conversion systems behind landmark projects such as Australia’s Waratah Super Battery.

In 2023, EKS Energy was acquired by Hitachi Energy, which took a controlling stake, while Powin retained a strategic interest. This strong outcome placed EKS’s platform within one of the world’s leading grid-technology manufacturers, showcasing how power electronics are becoming central to the economics and reliability of grid-scale storage.
